Department of Paleomammalogy

Chair: Dr. ZHANG Yingqi

Deputy Chair: Dr. MAO Fangyuan

The Department focuses on the origin , evolution, and classification of higher vertebrates; establishes and refines the chronostratigraphic system for China and the world; and explores the co-evolutionary relationships between organisms and their environments.

Research Directions:

1. Mesozoic and early Tertiary mammalian studies, with emphasis on Eogene biostratigraphy;

2. Classification, origin, and evolutionary processes of mammals from the Miocene to the Holocene, with the determination of fossil-bearing stratigraphic ages and the reconstruction of paleoenvironments during their respective periods.

Current Research Priorities:

1. Quaternary mammalian evolution and biostratigraphy;

2. Neogene mammalian evolution and stratigraphy;

3. Mesozoic–Paleogene mammalian evolution.
