The Department focuses on integrated studies of the Choukoutien site and its surrounding areas, encompassing paleoanthropology, Paleolithic archaeology, Quaternary mammalogy, and environmental change.

Current Research Priorities:

1. Compilation and cataloging of original site archives and materials;

2. Cleaning and sampling at key localities, followed by analyses including sediment micromorphology, geochemistry, combustion features, various dating methods, and palynology;

3. Systematic sorting and study of animal fossils and stone artifacts unearthed from the site;

4. Physical anthropological studies of Peking Man and Upper Cave Man;

5. Moderate new surveys and excavations.
